Virtual water is the amount of water produced during the manufacture of a product. It is also referred to as “hidden” water consumption.

The production of beef consumes a lot of water for the cultivation of animal feed. The calculation also takes into account drinking water for the animals, the cleaning of stables, the pollution of groundwater and the destruction of fresh water sources by livestock farming.

Cocoa is very water-intensive. It takes 17,000 liters of water to produce one kilogram of cocoa beans – the equivalent of around 11 bathtubs.

The average drinking water consumption per capita per day is 130 liters. Most of the drinking water is used for the bathroom, toilet, kitchen, washing machine and showers.
