Simply explained – Biohacking

Some terms from the world of science and sustainability are not so easy to understand. But don’t worry – in our new series “Simply explained”, we break down complex topics and technical terms into understandable words. This makes science accessible, entertaining and exciting for you!

What is biohacking?

Biohacking means analyzing and precisely understanding various bodily functions. The human body is seen as a laboratory in which you can research which simple solutions can have positive effects on the biological system. For example, people analyze their own sleep, heart rate or metabolism. In the long term, people want to achieve a higher age, more freedom and more life energy.

Biohacking - fit, robust, healthy and long-lasting?

Biohackers organize their lives in such a way that they are maximally efficient, satisfied and healthy. However, achieving this also requires a great deal of control over one’s own behavior and body. The motto “Getting the most out of your body and mind” is taken quite seriously by biohackers. Biohackers try to maximize their vitality and health with various ideas from competitive sports and nutrition. They want to take life into their own hands and take responsibility for their own health, performance and vital energy as far as possible.

The basics of biohacking

Biohacking is primarily about using obvious and simple elements to achieve positive changes in the body: Water and light, cold and heat, fasting, breathing and meditating, the forest and sleep. In addition, the well-known and correctly applied strength training plays an important role. In recent years, sophisticated high-tech methods such as microcurrent, blue and red light, magnetic field mats, smartwatches and tracking rings have also been used to optimize the body.

Another major field in biohacking is nutrition. However, as is so often the case, opinions differ greatly in this area. The range of beliefs extends from plant-based diets to “low carb” and “ketogenic” to the meat- and fish-rich Paleo diet. In addition, various dietary supplements, proteins and vitamins are often recommended.

Although there are still hardly any scientific studies on the subject of biohacking, more and more people are placing their trust in the concept and technical developments in this area have also progressed ever more rapidly in recent years. The topic is currently being researched most in the field of sports science. Biohacking methods have long been used in elite sport in particular to improve the recovery of athletes, among other things.
